Livonia Mayor-elect Maureen Brosnan, council members sworn in
Jan 05, 2020

Before taking office on Jan. 1, 2020, Livonia's newest office-holders made things official Thursday during a swearing-in ceremony. The ceremony was filled with a love of Livonia and its "families first" mentality.

Mayor-elect Maureen Miller Brosnan, Council President-elect Kathleen McIntrye, Council Vice President-elect Scott Bahr, Councilmen-elect Brandon McCullough and Rob Donovic as well as Clerk Susan Nash and Treasurer Lynda Scheel took the oath of office. Donovic, age 27, will be the youngest person ever to serve on Livonia's council.

The ceremony, held at Livonia City Hall, was the 34th of its kind in the city's history. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dan West was master of ceremonies.

Mayor Dennis Wright, though he'll continue to serve throughout the rest of this year, said goodbye to the "dream job" he's held for nearly four years and wished Brosnan luck.

"Now I'm honored to turn over the keys to our first woman mayor," he said. "Maureen, I wish you nothing the best of success in your new role."

Brosnan, Livonia's 12th mayor and the first woman to hold the job, was sworn in by her three children: Marie, Rory and Eleanor. Brosnan expressed gratitude to the public and said she's ready to take on the challenges that come with leading a city.

"I lean in anxious to blaze a trail through the challenges, which are the only things certain to appear on that horizon, because I have the support of those who work for our city, those who worked to get me elected and, in the words of Mr. Fred Rogers, 'all those who loved me into being," she said.

Brosnan also spoke to the idea that her administration will be one of change.

"In a few weeks, we will stand on the eve of a new decade. We will turn the page to a new chapter in our city’s story," she said. "I have often thought of what our city will look like before the light of the next day."

The new and returning council members thanked their families, campaign volunteers and the residents who elected them into office. McIntyre said she for one won't forget the seriousness of the job.

"I never forget that I work for you, the citizens of Livonia," she said. "And I never forget the responsibility that comes with the great privilege to represent you on the city council of Livonia."

But one thing was evident among every official from Wright to Brosnan: a love of their home.

"My story, like many of yours, began in Livonia," Brosnan said. "Together our stories have grown into an exceptional story of the biggest little small town you’ll ever find."
