Homeowners may conduct outdoor wood burning under the following conditions:

DEFINITIONS:

“Camp Fire” means a small outdoor fire intended for recreation or cooking but not intended for disposal of waste wood

or refuse.  (MI DEQ 4.1)

“Portable wood?burning unit” means a chimnea, patio warmer, or other contained wood burning device used for

outdoor recreation and/or heating.  (MI DEQ 4.9, IFC 307.4.3)

“Clean wood” means natural wood which has not been painted, varnished or coated with a similar material; has not

been pressure treated with preservatives; and does not contain resins or glues as in plywood or other composite wood

products.  (MI DEQ 4.2)

Note:  Clean wood does not consist of construction debris, grass clippings, leaves or any type of yard debris that would

produce high yields of smoke if burned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Portable wood burning units shall not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material and be

operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.  (IFC 307.4.3)

  • Outdoor recreational “camp fire” pits shall not be located within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material.

(NFPA Fire Code 10.10.4.3, MI DEQ 11.3)

  •  “Camp fire” pits shall not be larger than 3 feet wide by 3 feet high.  (MI DEQ 7.2.7)
  •  A garden hose connected to a water supply or other fire extinguishing equipment must be readily available for

use.  (NFPA Fire Code 10.10.5.1)

RULES:

  • Portable wood burning units and “camp fire” pits shall burn only clean wood.  (MI DEQ 11.2)
  • Burning of clean wood in a fire pit or portable wood burning unit must be attended and supervised by a

competent person of at least (18) years of age until the fire is extinguished and is cold.  (MI DEQ 7.2.10)

  • The burning of trash, construction materials, leaves, grass clippings, yard debris or any kind of material other

than clean wood is strictly prohibited.  (MI DEQ 6.00)

  •  If the use of a portable wood burning unit or “camp fire” pit creates a nuisance or other objectionable situation

prompting an official complaint to be filed with the Livonia Police or Fire Department, the fire may be subject to

immediate extinguishment.  (MI DEQ 11.4)
