Four pets die in weekend Livonia fire
Oct 24, 2015

Four pets died in a house fire that took place over the weekend at a home near Five Mile and Newburgh in the Castle Gardens subdivision.

The Livonia Fire Department responded to a call of a fire at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 15000 block of Blue Skies south of Five Mile. Fire marshal Dan Lee said the blaze was contained to the front of the house near the living room and front window, though there was smoke damage throughout the home.

He said it appeared the fire started from a candle that was left lit after the family left about an hour before. Lee said it appeared one of the pets in the home may have knocked it over. The fire was deemed not suspicious.

“There were some candles left burning when the family left the house,” he said. “It would appear that the candles were knocked over and the only thing moving in the house were pets.”

The animals, two dogs and two cats, perished in the fire, Lee said. No one else was injured.

“The firefighters tried to resuscitate one of the dogs, but they were unsuccessful,” Lee said. “There was nobody else left at the house at the time.”

Crews arrived at the home to secure it after the fire was put out. Lee said the home was not a total loss and that it should be fixable.

Lee said it’s important residents check their smoke detector batteries to ensure they are still working. He also said with the cold weather arriving, it’s important residents keep an eye out for fire dangers, including candles, fireplaces and furnace filters.

“This time of year, make sure all your flamed devices are blown out before you leave,” Lee said. “You just want to make sure you’re safe in the daytime.”
